Parent Participation Project (PPP)

Making Parent Participation a Reality: Parent Participation Project

The PPP team from left to right: Olivia, Alice and Mariana

The Parent Participation Project (PPP) is an exciting three year DCSF-funded project (2008 -2011) bringing parent & carers and local authority professionals together to improve the lives of our children and young people with disabilities.

A key part of this project is ensuring under-represented communities, such as fathers, parents from economically deprived areas and parents from black and minority ethnic communities are given the opportunity to get involved in parent forums and networks and to have their opinions represented.

Aims of the project

To ensure that:

  • all parents and carers whatever their background, and wherever they live are given the opportunity to have their opinions represented
  • there is an inclusive, well-managed and well-attended parent and carer forum in each of the four LA areas
  • professionals and parents are working confidently together to commission services for children and young people with disabilities
  • mechanisms are established that ensure a flow of information between local authority professionals and parents and carers so that effective decision-making can take place
  • feedback from decision-making bodies extends to the wider community of parents and carers

PPP is delighted to be working in partnership with parents and professionals in these four local authorities:

The diversity of the four local authorities means each area may produce very different results in terms of how partnership working looks, the lasting impact will be that resources will be developed to support best practice for any local authority looking for guidance on effective parent participation.
