Teaching and Promoting Play Skills with Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Date: Monday 09 February 2009

Time: 9am until 4pm

Age Range: Pre-school to KS1

Cost: £130

Course Description:

Children with autism find play skills and social interaction with peers extremely difficult. This course will provide an introduction to a range of play skills; the impact of autism spectrum conditions on play skills; and useful activities and techniques to build and promote early play skills with children with autism.

From this course you will gain:

  • An understanding of play and social interaction skills in young children and in young children with autism
  • Opportunities to consider different approaches and teaching strategies to improve the play skills of children with autism
  • Examples of activities, games and materials that can be useful when promoting play skills

Who should attend?

  • Teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs and those supporting children with autism in school settings
  • Play workers, carers and parents who support and facilitate play activities for children with autism

Overcoming barriers to teaching and learning for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Date: Monday 16 March 2009

Time: 9am until 4pm (lunch will be provided)

Course Description

Children with ASD can find learning in mainstream settings difficult. This workshop will aim to explore the impact of ASD in relation to learning and teaching and aims to provide strategies to overcome some of the obstacles faced by both the pupil and the teacher. Strategies will focus on the principles and techniques found within Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) including ‘Reinforcement Strategies’, ‘Discrete Trial Teaching’ and ‘Task Analysis’.

The course will have a practical component including practice and role play opportunities.

From this course you will gain:

  • An understanding of ASD and the impact this has on learners
  • An opportunity to explore and identify different learning profiles
  • An understanding of ‘Reinforcement Strategies’ and opportunities to practice in role play
  • An understanding of Discrete Trial Teaching and Task Analysis as specific teaching techniques including opportunities to practice
  • Ideas relating to differentiating timetables and learning conditions

Who should attend?

  • Those currently working with children and young people with ASD within school settings (Teachers, Sencos, LSAs)
  • May also be of interest to parents and carers supporting pupils in school settings

Challenging behaviour & Autistic Spectrum Disorder: How can we understand and help?

Date: Thursday 11 June 2009

Time: 9.00am - 4.00pm

Cost: £130

Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can often engage in a number of behaviours that one might define as ‘challenging’. This workshop will aim to explore what constitutes challenging behaviour in relation to young people with ASD, how such behaviours can impact upon their lives and the lives of those around them, and what can be done to help make such behaviours less challenging.

From this you will gain:

  • An understanding of the nature of challenging behaviour
  • An insight into both how and why challenging behaviour is prevalent within the ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) population
  • An understanding of challenging behaviour by analysing its purpose, including the use of practical tools to discover why such behaviours occur
  • An opportunity to explore some practical strategies (proactive and reactive) with a view to facilitating behaviour management

Who should attend:

  • Those currently working with young people with ASD, including teachers; Learning Support Assistants; Allied Health Professionals (e.g. Speech & Language Therapists; Occupational Therapists); Social Workers
  • Parents, carers and family members
